Burning Regulations

BURNING REGULATIONS

THESE OUTSIDE CONTROLLED BURNING REQUIREMENTS MUST BE AVAILABLE ON THE SITE WHILE BURNING

BURNING WILL CLOSE IN THE SUMMER UNTIL FALL, CHECK WITH THE FIRE DISTRICT FOR THOSE DATES

  1. AIR QUALITY ADVISORY HOTLINE: call 1-800-633-6247 (use 769-1422 as a back up only). GREEN only means air quality is OK for burning, if advisory indicated RED or YELLOW open burning is closed. NOTE: If date indicated on message is different then date you are calling, please use advisory given. They will only update it when there is a change in Air Quality.
  2. BURNING DURING EXTREME FIRE DANGER, A BURN BAN OR CLOSED BURNING SEASON IS PROHIBITED, EVEN IF THE AIR QUALITY HOTLINE STATES A GREEN BURNING DAY.
  3. Burning of yard waste is allowed during daylight hours only. Small campfires for cooking food are allowed at night. Recreational fires and bon fires may also be allowed at night with approval from the Fire District. Burn barrels are allowed after obtaining a copy of “additional instructions” for burn barrel use.
  4. Burning of construction debris by contractors and commercial trade waste is prohibited by the State of Idaho Department of Environmental Quality. Hauling of debris from one property to another to burn is prohibited. Small warming fires are allowed but shall be contained, shall involve clean lumber only (no glued products) and shall be extinguished before leaving site.
  5. Burn only clean untreated wood, clean paper and vegetation. Burning of trash, plastic, tires, garbage, pallets and other hazardous material is prohibited.
  6. All open burning requires a clearance of fifty (50) feet from any structure. Small piles (3 foot in diameter or less and no higher than 2 feet) can be 25 feet from a structure. Cooking fire and bonfires may not be within 25 feet of a structure or combustible materials unless they are contained in a barbecue pit.
  7. Burning is allowed by property owners, legal occupants and/or individuals authorized by the property owner.
  8. Logging slash piles and field burning must meet Idaho Department of Lands (IDL) and Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) guidelines. Refer to District Fire Inspectors for guidelines information. Additionally, permits are required from the IDL from May 10th to October 20th each year if you are burning outside the city limits (call 769-1577 for more information). Burning of stumps is prohibited in populated areas. A few clean stumps can be burned in a slash pile as long as they are consumed by the time the rest of the pile is gone.
  9. Your fire is your responsibility. Open burning, including bonfires, recreational fires and use of portable outdoor fireplaces shall be constantly attended until the fire is completely extinguished. A minimum of one portable fire extinguisher with a minimum 4-A rating or other approved on-site fire extinguishing equipment (dirt, sand, water barrel, garden hose and/or water truck) shall be available for immediate utilization.
  10. Open burning that will be offensive or objectionable due to smoke or odor emissions when atmospheric conditions or local circumstances make such fires hazardous as determined by fire official, shall be prohibited.
  11. Failure to comply with burning requirements may result in misdemeanor citation and/or being charged with extinguishment costs.
  12. OTHER SUGGESTIONS AND RECCOMENDATIONS FOR SAFE BURNING
    • MONITOR THE FIRE- You must be on site while the fire is burning. It is illegal to leave a fire unattended. If the fire is left unattended and the fire district is requested to extinguish the fire you can be charged for the extinguishment costs.
    • COMPLETELY EXTINGUISH THE FIRE- The fire must be completely out before you leave the site. Remember that you are responsible for any fire that you start until it is COMPLETELY out.
    • FIRE BREAKS- It is highly recommended that you have an area 10 foot wide around the fire that is cleared down to mineral soil and that no trees or vegetation is in close proximity to your fire area.
    • WIND AND FIRE DANGER- Check the fire danger each day before you burn. Do not burn during windy conditions. You are responsible if your fire escapes your burn area.
    • BURN REGULATIONS- Please obtain a new copy of the burn regulations each burning season. Changes to the burning regulations may change from year to year and you are responsible for understanding these changes.
    • TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL BURN:
      1. Keep burn pile free of dirt to allow for a complete burn.
      2. Start fire small and feed it as it burns down.
      3. Be aware of how topography (slope) will affect the fire’s behavior.
      4. Check weather forecast, air quality and fire danger level before burning.
      5. Follow all open burning rules.
